Welcome to Project Embrace
Project Embrace: Families, Advocates and Allies Mission is to improve outcomes and enrich the lives for LGBTQ youth in and out of foster care, by providing education and training to individuals within our community, child care placing agencies and school systems.
Why it started
This project started from the results of a couple of focus groups that were done Spring, 2009. The focus groups brought up issues such as, lack of culturally appropriate resources in the San Antonio community for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth in foster care. Another issue that was highlighted was San Antonio's lack of acceptance of the LGBTQ community. Lastly, LGBTQ foster care alumni did not feel safe with some of the foster families that they once were placed with and did not feel that they received culturally appropriate resources and services through the State system. Thus, in order for San Antonio to thrive our community must become more tolerant, accepting and eventually embrace this culturally diverse population through education and the creation of resources such as Project Embrace.
